GCMD Platform/Sources Keywords

This Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) keyword set contains names and descriptions of (1) types of measurement platforms and measurement sources, and (2) specific individual measurement platforms and measurement sources. The labels of the platforms and sources are usually short names (abbreviations or acronyms); the descriptions provide further information.

For example: (1) BUOYS, (2) MAPS, (3) VOYAGER 1.

The keywords are arranged in a hierarchy of categories. Examples of categories are: In Situ Land-based Platforms, Maps/Charts/Photographs, and Solar/Space Observation Satellites.

These keywords have been used by organizations such as the National Snow and Ice Data Center (USA), and the British Atmospheric Data Centre (UK).

Any person or organization may request an addition, modification or deletion to the keywords. A requester can be from the user community, a provider of metadata to GCMD, or any other GCMD stakeholder.

The keywords help facilitate the classification and discovery of Earth Science data by providing a rich vocabulary for characterizing the data. The GCMD keywords are used by hundreds of data providers worldwide for categorizing the ~33,000 records stored in the Common Metadata Repository.
