This Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) keyword set combines keywords covering two broad areas: earth science, and earth science services.
For example: in the earth science area: EL NINO SOUTHERN OSCILLATION (ENSO)
; in the earth science services area: GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEMS
.
The keywords are clustered by subject categories. In the earth science section, there are categories such as AGRICULTURE
, BIOSPHERE
, and OCEANS
. In the earth science services section, there are categories such as DATA ANALYSIS AND VISUALIZATION
, EDUCATION/OUTREACH
, and HAZARDS MANAGEMENT
.
The keywords are used by organizations such as CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric research (CMAR), Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), and the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).
Any person or organization may request an addition, modification or deletion to the keywords. A requester can be from the user community, a provider of metadata to GCMD, or any other GCMD stakeholder.

The keywords help facilitate the classification and discovery of Earth Science data by providing a rich vocabulary for characterizing the data. The GCMD keywords are used by hundreds of data providers worldwide for categorizing the ~33,000 records stored in the Common Metadata Repository.
