This Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) keyword set contains names and descriptions of instruments and sensors used in earth sciences and related fields. There are keywords both for (1) types of instruments, sensors, and measurement techniques, and (2) specific instruments and sensors in deployment in various places on earth and in space. The labels of instruments and sensors are usually short names (abbreviations or acronyms); the descriptions provide further information.
For example: (1) SOLAR TELESCOPES
, (2) AIRSAR
(an airborne radar system deployed by NASA/JPL).
The keywords are arranged in a hierarchy of categories. Examples of categories are: Active Remote Sensing
, In Situ/Laboratory Instruments
, and Solar/Space Observing Instruments
.
These keywords have been used by organizations such as the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center, Columbia University (USA), and the Atmospheric Science Data Center, NASA (USA).
Any person or organization may request an addition, modification or deletion to the keywords. A requester can be from the user community, a provider of metadata to GCMD, or any other GCMD stakeholder.
